Lydia, mum of two, shares how she has used Simply Eat at home…

What role does food play in your day-to-day life?

One of my passions in life is food, so I really delight in finding cookery inspiration, whether that’s through recipe books, cookery shows on TV, or hunting out interesting places to eat – on the rare occasions we get to do so with a young family!

It's important to us as a family to sit down and eat together.

Spending time in the kitchen preparing meals for the family can sometimes feel mundane, but I enjoy the sense of accomplishment with thankfulness that everyone has full tummies from a meal I’ve cooked. At the weekends, my husband and I often enjoy cooking dishes that are more time-consuming and use more unusual ingredients.

It’s important to us as a family to sit down and eat together. Already, my four-year-old takes the opportunity to download her day and talk about the happy and sad times, all whilst eating. We also use the time while they are captivated by food to read a devotional together and pray. It’s always a short time, but doing it while eating at the table makes it a part of our routine.

Ultimately, with two little children your days revolve around eating – there is always the next meal to plan and prepare!

What were some of your favourite things about Simply Eat?

Not only are the images captivating, but the concept behind Simply Eat is so unique and compelling. I always enjoy hearing what people like to cook and eat, and this book shares recipes across the whole spectrum, from simple baking to slow-cooked meat dishes. It’s also so inspiring to read about the role food plays in the furthering of God’s kingdom in people’s everyday lives.

There is the temptation to take so much about food for granted.

There is the temptation to take so much about food for granted. We can box it up as the second thought in our everyday life and sometimes don’t respect the privilege and opportunity as we ought to. It’s also very easy to underestimate the importance of meeting and sharing with others over food.

Simply Eat demonstrates how integral food is in our lives and how it can play a special part in our walk with God.

How have you been able to use Simply Eat at home?

I have loved cooking recipes from the book for our family meals, and have particularly enjoyed baking the brownies with my daughter, as I was then able to share the story behind the recipe with her. Sometimes I will simplify the stories for my 4-year-old to understand, or I’ll read direct from the book. It’s been a great way to simply share how people who love God have used food to share that love with others.

Simply Eat has inspired me to step out, using my abilities to cook a meal and then share it with others.

What impact has this had on your home and sharing your faith?

I have recently been thinking and looking in to the ‘theology’ of food, and this book has really helped to answer many of my questions, through people’s personal reflections and drawing on scripture.

Simply Eat has inspired me to step out, using my abilities to cook a meal and then share it with others. Sometimes the act of sharing time with others around our table is enough to give comfort to those who I see in a hard place in life. Raising little ones can sometimes put a strain on hospitality, but reading the testimonies in Simply Eat has challenged and inspired me as to how I can use food to the glory of God at the stage of life I’m in.
